In soccer, scrimmages are known as "friendlies." Temple University's fencing teams made the trip to Happy Valley two weeks ago to open the season at Penn State's Garrett Open. Now the Penn State men's and women's fencing teams will pay the Owls a visit when they travel to Philadelphia this weekend for the 2005 Temple Open. It might be a little soon to be making predictions about an entire season, but for the No. 2 Penn State ACHA Division I Icers the next few weekends could tell their story. Two weeks ago, the first snowfall of the season hit Happy Valley. As students fought through the conditions on their way to class, the men's swimming team ignored the weather during a routine outdoor practice. As nightmarish as last season was for everyone remotely connected to the Penn State football team, the Nittany Lion's 16-3 loss to Wisconsin last Sept. 25 may have been the low point. Penn State has already derailed the Heisman hopes of one stud tailback this season, and it will be looking to do the same tomorrow when Wisconsin tailback Brian Calhoun comes to Beaver Stadium. Contrary to popular opinion, Wisconsin is not a one-horse team. This Sunday, the Penn State women's rugby team will close out its fall season against Navy, hoping to cap off an undefeated year and earn a favorable seeding for its spring campaign. It can't get much closer than this. Walking off the field, players couldn't hold back their emotions. They cried. They were stunned. At 5:50 p.m. tomorrow, the Penn State men's soccer team will leave its locker room for Jeffrey Field for the final time this season and perhaps the final time in senior co-captain David Walters and Brian Devlin's careers. The whistle blew in the middle of a drill in practice. While Rec Hall, now home of the No. 3 Penn State women's volleyball team, has always been a sports complex, the home of the Hoosiers, the U-School Gym in Bloomington, Ind., used to be part of a laboratory. If this is how you get the jitters out, it's a pretty good way to do it. To this day, Joe Paterno can't remember exactly when the tradition began. Who was the first quarterback lucky enough to lock down the front seat? Predictions (PDF format). There might be tears on the field when this game against Wisconsin -- this Senior Day -- is over. Normally, I do not judge a book by its cover. The original Saw was one of the more grisly movie-going experiences of my young life, and I loved every second it. None of my schoolyard chums could work up the gumption to join me at the cineplex, so my first viewing of Saw was held in my living room while my then-flatmate hid behind her door as I yelled in awe at the television. Saw was poorly acted and unflinchingly nasty for no discernible reason. Naturally, I couldn't wait for the sequel. So college life has you down. You bombed your midterm and your ex called it quits--but nothing compares to the miserable life of Chicago weatherman David Spritz (Nicolas Cage) in The Weather Man. Back before VH1 would've ever dreamed of regularly airing Chingy videos or The Swankiest Celebrity Toilet Bowls, the network used to be one of the last great bastions of adult contemporary music. What is adult contemporary, you ask? Why, it's any Elton John song that's been released in your lifetime. And VH1 used to play that jive 24/7. Prime: a movie with a title that reminds you of numbers but is actually a reference to something quite naughty. Interested? I thought so. By way of the Great White North, the city that never sleeps and the state you'd be advised not to mess with comes an unusual all-ages Friday night Roustabout! at the Tall Shiva Hookah Lounge, 224 W. College Ave. Thirty minutes before the premiere of this weekend's Saturday Night Live (SNL), students will get a closer look and an opportunity to laugh at former cast member Lenny the Lion.
