PSU reports violations to employers, schools

As a senior, the "so what will you do after graduation?" question may make you cringe. And for those of us who decide to take on the challenge of applying to graduate school, beware. What we thought were insignificant indiscretions as a freshman (specifically student code of conduct violations) may creep from your closet to haunt you.

Remember when your resident assistant wrote you up for underage drinking? No big deal, right? Wrong.

I recently found out the hard way.

I have worked hard enough during my four years at Penn State to have earned a chance at being accepted into some of the country's top law schools. Not until last week did I realize that my "no big deal" of a write-up, which was a one-time offense, must be reported on my applications as disciplinary action.

So, while it may be too late for me, it's not for you "underagers" who may not be aware of the consequences your poor decisions may have on your future.

After you graduate, your infractions remain on your educational records for seven years. And when the information is requested by graduate schools or employers, the university is required to disclose it.

Have fun and live up your four precious years.

But remember that though you are not in the "real world" yet, your actions can still follow you there.
