Anti-straight policies would cause uproar
I find myself wondering what it would be like for Coach Rene Portland and Penn State if homophobia were heterophobia ("Portland accused of anti-gay remarks," Oct. 12)? If Portland had told the Chicago Sun-Times in 1986 and The Philadelphia Inquirer in 1991 she didn't permit heterosexual women on her team, would it still be "her" team today? If Portland suggested that team members date other women if they want to remain on the team, would the university community stand by silently and look the other way for more than 14 years? If Portland told team members to cut their hair short and dress to look more like lesbians if they wanted to keep their scholarships, would there even be a Lady Lion basketball team? If you are straight, could you imagine being required to do these things? If homophobia turned into heterophobia, do you think the investigation would have taken this long? Where is the equity?
