NEWS

Downtown State College businesses are ready for alumni and fans to inundate Happy Valley this homecoming weekend.

Many downtown business owners are pleased with the prospect that the business privilege tax might be a ghost of the past after the State College Borough Council voted earlier this month to repeal it.

Just as students banned together to create a "whiteout" at the Ohio State game, a cabinet of student leaders is hoping to white out poor sportsmanship, harmful behavior and irresponsible drinking beginning at this weekend's game against Purdue.

Months of preparation from committee members and organizations will culminate tonight with the Homecoming 2005 "Heart of the Lion" parade.

Police will have an increased presence on campus and downtown this weekend for homecoming and Halloween festivities -- including Saturday's game against Purdue, officials said.

Despite playing a record 2,632 consecutive games and being baseball's all-time Iron Man, Cal Ripken Jr. assured the audience in Eisenhower Auditorium last night that he is no Superman.

The State College Borough Planning Commission voted last night to prepare testimony for lawmakers suggesting a limitation on plans to allow construction of 145-foot mixed-use buildings in the borough.

SPORTS

Coming off two huge wins last weekend, the Lady Icers worked grueling morning hours this week in preparation for a showdown in Massachusetts this weekend.

The Penn State women's golf team has become accustomed to good finishes this season.

There were no proclamations of "get the monkey off my back," but perhaps they were never vocalized.

As practice broke this morning, Penn State men's soccer coach Barry Gorman left his team with something to chew on.

A lot has changed since the last time the Penn State ACHA Division I Icers and the Duquesne Dukes met.

It's more of the same old, same old from the field hockey team -- taking it game-by-game and hopefully more winning will come along with it.

As the camera rolled for College Sports Television's "Total Access," players from the No. 3 Penn State women's volleyball team gathered in a circle, holding their collective breath as senior Sam Tortorello hosted a segment of 20 questions.

The Big Ten Championship race is a new experience for the rookies of the Penn State women's cross country team. For freshman Molly Ritter, however, this competition holds another challenge: the successful completion of her first airplane ride.

A good race in the Big Ten Championships this weekend could ensure success at the NCAA Regionals and help pave the way to the Nationals for the Penn State men's cross country team.

Purdue has seen a smattering of talent this year.

Unlike a year ago, they don't have a Heisman candidate to prepare for, but that hasn't stopped them from treating it similarly.

At the outset of the season, when all the Big Ten media hype centered on the Ohio States, Michigans and Iowas of the conference, Purdue was always in the back of Joe Paterno's mind.
Predictions (PDF format).

The last time the Penn State football team left the field in Beaver Stadium, it was coming off one of its biggest upset victories in recent memory and was in the thick of the national championship hunt.

It's a great thing to go to a movie and bond with the people you go with. What's not so great is when you are bonding with people who you don't know because you're standing around outside the theater post-movie all wondering what the bumble-booty just happened.

One of the small perks of being a Collegian reviewer is being able to write about listening to music. Oftentimes, though, my album-listening sessions end with a few well-deserved minutes tossing the disc around my apartment like a small, metallic Frisbee.

I want David Berman to be a screenwriter.

As I started listening to Brandi Carlile's self-titled CD, I couldn't help but feel that I had heard her songs elsewhere.

Black Rob's been in trouble. Trouble with the law, kidney trouble, trouble getting himself together enough to record the tracks that make up The Black Rob Report -- the Spanish Harlem-born emcee's first album in five years. But when Rob, entered the booth to spit what comes out in the Report, he must have known that it would be worth the trouble at last.

A floor puzzle created by local artist Michael Pilato and several elementary students lies on the floor of 109 Pattee Library, representing images of people of different ethnicities holding hands around the world in a heart shape.

Penn State alumnus Van Wagner will bring his musical talents to Otto's Brewery, 2105 N. Atherton St., on Sunday.

Last night's concert was a night of firsts.
