A State College man charged with possessing and distributing child pornography will face trial sometime early next year.
Travis J. Biggans, 26, of 197 Larkspur Lane, waived his preliminary hearing yesterday and is scheduled for a pretrial conference on Jan. 26.
Biggans was arrested Oct. 20 and charged with 61 felony counts of sexual abuse of children after student staff members at The Daily Collegian -- in the James Building, 123 S. Burrowes St. -- discovered in an office printer eight pornographic images depicting children.
Biggans, a third-shift delivery driver for Collegian Inc., which publishes The Daily Collegian, has 24-hour access to office computers in the James Building.
According to court documents, information from the Collegian systems manager and Penn State University Network Security department showed Biggans had been logged in to the computer at the time the images were sent to the printer, and Biggans later told police his password was not public knowledge.
According to court documents, Biggans said he attempted to print the images in the James Building after he had looked at similar images for about a year and distributed them for "a few months."
In a search of Biggans' home by Patton and Ferguson township police officers following the initial photo discovery, additional pornographic images involving children were discovered on his computer and in his safe, according to court documents.
According to court documents, Penn State University Police Officer Vicki Aiken said a court order sent to Yahoo requesting information about Biggans' e-mail account revealed a zip file containing 22 pornographic images.
Collegian Inc. General Manager Gerry Hamilton said Biggans, who works each morning from about 2 to 9 a.m., almost never comes into contact with student staff members because of his hours.
Hamilton said Biggans, who has been a Collegian Inc. employee for the past six years, has a "very good employment record."
As of press time yesterday, there had been no plea agreement reached between the state and the defense, Centre County Assistant District Attorney Lance Marshall said.
He said if Biggans is found guilty on all 61 third-degree felony charges, he could receive from probation to seven years incarceration for each felony count.
Biggans' lawyer, William Tressler, was unavailable for comment as of press time yesterday.
