"We weren't ready. We didn't show up to play," Wilson said.
When the players were let out of the meeting at 12:30 a.m., an hour after the game had ended, Battista made sure the rest of the team knew what Wilson already did and were prepared to defeat the Sun Devils (1-3-0) the following afternoon, which they did 5-1.
"We talked about a lot of things. About the lack of energy, lack of respect for our opponent," Battista said. "You could see it when they announced the starting lineups. There was no excitement, no energy, no enthusiasm from our guys."
There was no shortage of speaking material for Battista, who, as a result of receiving a game misconduct during the Icers' previous ACHA game against Washington and Jefferson two weeks ago, was forced to watch the loss from the press area of the Ice Pavilion.
The suspension prevented him from talking to the No. 2 Icers (5-2-0) at all during the game.
But during the post game meeting, Battista let his team know they would have to play with a lot more energy if they were to defeat the Sun Devils when the two teams met again the following afternoon.
On Friday night, Arizona State jumped out to an early lead, leading 2-0 midway through the first period, before the Icers even took their first shot on net.
"We've played NCAA Division I teams and have never been out shot 10-0 halfway through the first period in our rink." Battista said. "It was tough to watch that."
The Icers were forced the play catch-up the rest of the game. A power play goal from Keith Jordan with 8:28 left in the second period got the Icers within one goal but an Arizona State score six minutes later halted any momentum the Icers had gained.
Post-meeting on Saturday, the Icers rebounded to defeat the Sun Devils 5-1 with help from freshman Luke DeLorenzo, who recorded his first hat trick in a Penn State uniform.
Saturday, the Icers were the team to jump out to an early lead as DeLorenzo scored two goals in the first 12:44 of the game.
"We had to come and show them that we wanted to play. We jumped on them quick and early and they couldn't rebound," DeLorenzo said.
DeLorenzo would add his third goal with one second remaining in the second period on a shot from just inside the Sun Devil's defensive zone that beat Arizona State goalie Herb Hollins through the five-hole. Junior Mike McMullen scored his eighth goal of the season and freshman Steve Peck added the Icers' final goal.
Arizona State, like the Icers the night before, were unable to recover from the early goals scored against them, as Penn State goalie Paul Mammola carried a shutout until Arizona State defenseman Ray Corey scored a power play goal with 2:16 remaining in the third period.
"This has been a trademark of ours," Battista said. "We lose one night and we come back and we play a much better game the next night."
A wake up call of a game, a late night meeting later, and the tradition continues.
