Letter to the Editor
Famous relationships teach public nothing

I am writing in response to the column "Celebrity relationships educational for 'average Joe'," Oct. 19, because frankly, the conclusions Thomas Mei draws from watching celebrity relationships deteriorate are sickening.

In what skewed world does a financially successful wife make a marriage fail? This column seems to suggest that because Jessica Simpson is not barefoot in the kitchen, it is "natural" for her husband to want to leave her. Likewise, it also implies that the reason Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes are together is because he is older and successful and because he is a man, his success is not threatening to the relationship. I don't consider myself a feminist, but even I see something wrong with this picture. What ever became of women's rights? Did the feminist movement even happen?

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to withdraw from my classes this semester and brush up on my secretarial skills because, after all, I still want a successful marriage someday. And as for you, Thomas Mei, perhaps you are counting on your secretary/wife to edit your columns someday, but it really wouldn't hurt you to brush up on your grammatical skills, as fragments have no place in college-level writing.
