NEWS

With a winning football team and unusually warm fall temperatures, it's hard to miss the extra bounce in many Penn State students' steps lately.

Meghan Edwards was studying on the steps of Old Main yesterday when a group of students approached her and asked her to write a letter to a veteran.

Legal counsel for former Penn State women's basketball player Jen Harris spoke with a Penn State attorney via teleconference yesterday and reiterated its promise to file a lawsuit if remarks made about its client in a press release are not retracted by today.

More than 50 Penn State students rallied in the HUB-Robeson Center yesterday to call for the dismissal of Penn State's women's basketball coach Rene Portland and to threaten to boycott athletic events and classes.

A Johnstown man was arrested in connection with a series of three sexual assaults that occurred at two local movie theaters Oct. 4, according to a State College Police Department press release.

Two candidates will vie for the position of Centre County district attorney Nov. 8, a position the missing Ray Gricar had held for 20 years until his disappearance more than six months ago.

With just a few weeks left before the State College elections, incumbent Mayor Bill Welch addressed concerns of the students' role as community members at last night's Undergraduate Student Government Senate meeting.

The midway point in the semester has passed, and fall break has been crossed off of October calendars.

SPORTS

Running has always been a big part of Penn State assistant cross country coach Artie Gilkes' life. And it may be the reason he is still here today to tell his story.

Crammed into a small cinderblock room just outside the famed tunnel at Michigan Stadium, Penn State coach Joe Paterno made it clear that after suffering a 27-25 loss on a dramatic and, for Penn State, gut-wrenching last-second touchdown pass, all he wanted to do was go home.

Like a child eager to play with some new toys, Ed DeChellis appeared excited yesterday to finally have a full roster of players to use in both practices and games.

The Penn State ACHA Division I Icers refer to the trio of freshman Luke DeLorenzo, junior Michael McMullen and freshman Frank Berry as the red line, the name traditionally given to the top offensive line on the team.

Trap games happen in every sport. They are games that are played against inferior opponents -- usually on the road -- between a huge win and an even more meaningful game.

There were 12 minutes remaining in the second half, and defender Chase Bacon and forward Shaun Banta left from the timeout huddle laughing.

Playing No. 14 Ohio State at home and Michigan on the road would agitate any coach's nerves.
