Police arrest man for assault

Collegian Staff Writers

A Johnstown man was arrested in connection with a series of three sexual assaults that occurred at two local movie theaters Oct. 4, according to a State College Police Department press release.

Fred G. Dravis, 50, of 122 Geis St., Johnstown, is currently being held in Centre County Correctional Facility in lieu of $100,000 bail on charges of attempted rape, indecent assault, indecent exposure, open lewdness, stalking, disorderly conduct and harassment, according to court documents.

Dravis was arrested after State College police received a tip from Logan Township Police Department in Altoona, where Dravis had been arrested in connection with a similar incident in August 2004.

State College police Sgt. Mark Argiro said Dravis has a "lengthy criminal history," which most likely affected the amount of his bail.

Dravis is accused of trying to rape a 23-year-old Penn State student at about 8:30 p.m. Oct 4 in the parking lot of Premiere Theater, 125 Premiere Drive, according to the press release.

The victim was sitting in a "fairly empty" theater, police said, and a man in his late 30s or early 40s, two seats away from her, began to masturbate, according to court documents.

After first moving away from the man, the victim left the theater, police said.

Dravis allegedly followed her to her vehicle, according to police, and while she was attempting to enter her car, he spun her around and was able to pull down her pants, police said. Dravis was allegedly mumbling, and the victim told police she smelled alcohol on his breath, according to court documents.

Dravis allegedly tried to engage in vaginal intercourse with the victim but was unsuccessful, police said. He proceeded to masturbate and ejaculate on the victim, police said.

Mount Nittany Medical Center contacted the State College Police Department at about 10 p.m. Oct. 4 to notify them of the incident.

About 30 minutes later, in a separate incident, police believe Dravis allegedly exposed himself to another woman at Carmike Cinema 6, 501 Benner Pike, about one mile away from Premiere Theatre.

According to police, Dravis sat a few seats away from the woman and began to masturbate. The woman immediately left the theater and had no further contact with the man, police said.

About 30 minutes later, at about 9:40 p.m., Dravis is also accused of exposing himself to another woman at Cinema 6, police said. She said she left the theater for a few minutes, and when she returned, the man was gone, according to court documents.

Both Cinema 6 victims identified Dravis as the man who had masturbated in front of them, according to court documents.

The surveillance footage of the man at Premiere Theater confirmed that the same man involved in the sexual assault at Premiere Theater was also seen at Cinema 6 that night, State College police Cpl. Tim Sleeth said.

Dravis will appear for his preliminary hearing at 8:30 a.m. Oct. 26 in Centre County Courthouse.
