More than 50 Penn State students rallied in the HUB-Robeson Center yesterday to call for the dismissal of Penn State's women's basketball coach Rene Portland and to threaten to boycott athletic events and classes.
The Student Stonewall Coalition-led rally comes in the wake of last week's accusations by former Lady Lion Jen Harris that Portland dismissed her from the team last year because Portland believed her to be a lesbian.
Darryl Watson, a coalition representative and vice president of the Penn State Black Caucus, led the rally in chants of "No hate at Penn State."
"We will not be quiet on this campus," Watson said.
enn State spokesman Tysen Kendig said that the university is taking the allegations very seriously and would investigate but that the investigation would take time.
"We're not going to conduct the investigation based on rallies and headlines," Kendig said. "We're going to base it on facts."
Kendig said Harris has never brought allegations against Portland in the past.
"There was never a complaint filed about the coach by a student-athlete," Kendig said. "Even when we've invited those complaints, none was ever made."
Watson said the goal of the coalition -- which includes members of Black Caucus, Allies and a number of other organizations -- was not just to have Portland dismissed but to achieve administrative reorganization at Penn State.
"Rene Portland is just a symptom of a much larger problem," he said. "The fact that Rene Portland is allowed to be openly bigoted and openly homophobic speaks of the reality of Penn State."
