HUB rally protests coach

Collegian Staff Writers

More than 50 Penn State students rallied in the HUB-Robeson Center yesterday to call for the dismissal of Penn State's women's basketball coach Rene Portland and to threaten to boycott athletic events and classes.

The Student Stonewall Coalition-led rally comes in the wake of last week's accusations by former Lady Lion Jen Harris that Portland dismissed her from the team last year because Portland believed her to be a lesbian.

Darryl Watson, a coalition representative and vice president of the Penn State Black Caucus, led the rally in chants of "No hate at Penn State."

"We will not be quiet on this campus," Watson said.

enn State spokesman Tysen Kendig said that the university is taking the allegations very seriously and would investigate but that the investigation would take time.

"We're not going to conduct the investigation based on rallies and headlines," Kendig said. "We're going to base it on facts."

Kendig said Harris has never brought allegations against Portland in the past.

"There was never a complaint filed about the coach by a student-athlete," Kendig said. "Even when we've invited those complaints, none was ever made."

Watson said the goal of the coalition -- which includes members of Black Caucus, Allies and a number of other organizations -- was not just to have Portland dismissed but to achieve administrative reorganization at Penn State.

"Rene Portland is just a symptom of a much larger problem," he said. "The fact that Rene Portland is allowed to be openly bigoted and openly homophobic speaks of the reality of Penn State."

Portland denied the allegations in a press release Friday, citing a poor work ethic and performance on and off the court as the reasons for Harris' dismissal. Portland also said she supported the university's non-discrimination policy.

"If we have to have a rally every day to proclaim our intrinsic worth, then we will do so," said Black Caucus President Gandarvaka Gray.

Watson said coalition members would continue to hold rallies and boycott university activities unless Portland is dismissed.

"We will ask students to pledge not to participate in the university activities," he said. "If that means not going to class, if that means not participating in any extracurricular activities, then that's what it means."

Kendig added that it would not be in students' best interests to boycott classes.

"They're paying for their education; they ought to get their money's worth," he said.

Undergraduate Student Government President Galen Foulke, who stopped by yesterday's rally, said the issue is of grave concern to him.

"We have to be fair to both sides," he said. "The university definitely needs to be thorough and make sure they're making the right decision."

But Watson said Portland's history of alleged discrimination should be evidence enough for her dismissal.

"Justice delayed is justice denied," he said. "Them taking a snail's pace at doing what is necessary after 25 years of student complaints and demands is tantamount to them not caring."

John Litz (senior-geography) said he personally would like to see Portland dismissed.

"I'm not one to usually take up the flag for the gay community, but this is outrageous," Litz said. "She has a long history of outrageously homophobic remarks."

Assistant Sports Information Director Erin Whiteside said Portland would not comment on the rally.
