Tiffany Weimer always seems to be chasing somebody.
Penn State's senior striker tied Brandi Chastain's previous NCAA record of 15 consecutive games with a goal Friday with her game-winning score against Ohio State, but on Sunday, Portland's senior forward Christine Sinclair broke the record, scoring against Pepperdine for her 16th straight game with a goal.
That Sinclair broke the record first does not discourage Weimer.
"The streak is not just 15 anymore," she said. "It's going to be whoever finishes the season out."
The streak now has a flavor that resembles the 1998 home run race between Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa, with each forward matching each other, game for game. Weimer enjoys Sinclair's competition, even uses it as a motivator.
"It's kind of cool that somebody else is doing the same thing that I'm doing," Weimer said. "I don't mind sharing it at all."
Weimer has gone on streaks where she has scored in five or six straight games before, and even got close to Chastain's record last year when she scored in 13 straight games. She never thought she'd have another streak that would rival Chastain's record.
"I never expected a 15-game scoring streak. That surprised me," she said. "You don't ever think that people do that."
Weimer finished second behind Sinclair in last year's Hermann Trophy voting, and both are contending for the honor again this year. Right now, Sinclair edges Weimer statistically. Sinclair has 26 goals and seven assists to Weimer's 22 goals and two assists.
Weimer said that tying Chastain's record was "pretty cool."
"After I scored, my teammates on the field actually said 'Congratulations,' " Weimer said. "That meant a lot to me."
Weimer is also close to tying former Penn State soccer star Christie Welsh's Big Ten record of 82 goals. Weimer's teammates, though, have said they are not doing anything special to get their star forward the ball.
"She takes care of that on her own," forward Carmelina Moscato said. "Something's working, and she's just getting shots off and goal opportunities. I don't think we're changing anything specifically to cater to her."
With all the attention Weimer's streak has garnered, it would be easy to believe that it could be a distraction, but Weimer has been all business.
"It's not like I'm doing something that I wouldn't normally do," she said. "That's what I do. I score goals. I'm just doing my job."
And with her streak still going strong, it's obvious that Weimer has showed up to work every day so far this year.
