Lions one win from history

Collegian Staff Writer

If this sounds familiar, it should.

The Penn State field hockey team recorded win No. 14 during the weekend, and should it win out over its next opponent, Bucknell, it will have tied the school record for longest winning streak, which was set in 1993.

Great actions turn into great habits, and even though the Nittany Lions (14-1, 4-0 Big Ten) look past the fact that their winning ways are slowly turning into habit, nothing could deter them from a course set on auto-drive. Not even when they take on Bucknell at 6 tonight at Astroturf Field.

"We continue to focus every week," Penn State field hockey coach Char Morett said. "There is something different to work on after every game, and it is always changing."

The Bison (8-5) come traveling down the road looking to provide a challenge for a loaded team that refuses to lie down.

"It's always good to have a competitive game," Morett said. "The game is a nice mid-week game to help us keep up with consistency."

Despite the short break between the weekend's thrilling victory over conference rival Michigan State to today's game, the Lions are still looking to be on top of their game against Bucknell.

"We've been looking at some tap and a couple of other things like individual defense," Morett said.

While the wins have stopped surprising anyone but themselves, the No. 6 Lions continue to dominate on both sides of the ball. The last few weeks the practice has focused on passing and team defense. Now the focus rests on the individual and time management.

Strong forwards Britney Long and Shaun Banta, along with midfielders Natalie Berrena and Annelise Legel, continue to harass opposing goalies, having them leave State College with a sudden drop in self-esteem.

The defense doesn't have to be as quite as aggressive considering the offense it has fronting it. Still, goalkeeper Megan Akstin and her iron curtain company of Molly Schriver and Ali Scola have yet to disappoint.
