New, local bands to share stage

Collegian Staff Writer

Tonight, the Crowbar stage will be burning up with three hot new bands and two local bands.

The three main bands, Throne, The Track Record and Rookie of the Year, are all part of the Level 27 tour, named for a clothing line started last year by Good Charlotte guitarist Billy Martin. Throne played for Level 27's first sponsored tour this past summer, racking up 30 shows in two months. For the second tour, Level 27 added two more bands and an even more demanding schedule. The current tour began Sept. 1 and will run until Oct. 23, with almost no days off.

"It's very intense," Derek Trafton, lead singer of the melodic rock band Throne, said. "But we usually look forward to it. We get bored on our days off."

Trafton considers Throne unique because it is a three-piece band, and all of its members are related.

"We started playing 10 years ago," Trafton said. "Two of us were 14 years old and the other was 11. At first, we just did it for fun. We recorded a CD on our own in high school. Then we recorded a four-song EP, and radio stations picked it up and started playing it. In 2001, we actually started touring and playing for a living."

While Throne has already toured the United States five times, including their Level 27 summer tour, this is the first tour for The Track Record, which has been together for almost three years.

It will be Rookie of the Year's last tour before hitting the studio to record their next album, scheduled for a Valentine's Day 2006 release. Their full line-up only started in January, but they have been touring non-stop since then.

"We're acoustic-based, but we still have a full band rock sound," Rookie of the Year guitarist Mike Kamerman said. "We're a break from the heavier bands; we're more chill."

While bands that tour together are often so similar that audiences get bored, Michael Strackbein of The Track Record said this tour has a variety of sounds.

"[The tour] is a lot of different kinds of music, where most tours are only one kind of music," Strackbein said. "Rookie of the Year is acoustic rock, Throne is more solid rock, and we're somewhere in between. It's definitely like watching three different bands. Sometimes, every band sounds the same."

Local band The Riot will kick off the night at 9 p.m., while Solaris, the other local band, will end the night. The Track Record, Throne and Rookie of the Year will play between 9:45 p.m. and 12:45 a.m.

"This show offers a glimpse into new and upcoming bands," Crowbar General Manager Chuck Smitley said. "It is a chance to see and hear new original music. Also, it gives two local bands, Solaris and The Riot, a chance to showcase their talent."
