NEWS

Despite a unanimous vote by Centre County commissioners accepting an emergency preparedness resolution Tuesday, local government officials say they are still unaware of the county's plan for many different emergencies.

Just weeks after announcing the development of a Homeland Security in Public Health Preparedness degree, two new similar graduate certificates will soon be available, officials announced yesterday.

Some students are walking on campus sporting a new fashion statement: orange stickers and buttons that support smoke-free restaurants and bars.

Having a car at Penn State has traditionally meant a fight for coveted parking spots and a battle with soaring gas prices, but that might not be the case forever.

A service that one university spiritual leader said was designed "to affirm that people of all sexual orientations are human beings loved by God" will return after being absent from the campus scene for three years.

Local police and officials are welcoming decreases in some alcohol-related activity displayed in recent studies conducted by the Campus and Community Partnership United Against Dangerous Drinking, but they are cautioning that there are still alarming trends.

During home football weeks, professor Earnest Blackshear will often kick off his introductory psychology classes with a rally cry.

Penn State student Miguel A. Hernandez Jr. was arrested Wednesday and charged with threatening two women who were involved in a 2003 case in which he was convicted of indecent assault.

A man wanted in connection with the sexual assault of a female Penn State student Tuesday night at Premier Theater is suspected in two additional sexual assaults that same night at a different cinema, the State College Police Department said yesterday.

The keynote speaker for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and allies (LGBTA) community's celebration of National Coming Out Week, Christian de la Huerta, concluded his speech on sexuality, spirituality and ultimately finding oneself in a unique way.

State College residents and students will see an increased police presence this weekend in anticipation of tomorrow's nationally televised football game, police said yesterday.

SPORTS

Cast in the shadow of Beaver Stadium, at the corner of Park Avenue and University Drive, lies Jeffrey Field, home of Penn State's other undefeated team.

Most coaches would be concerned about their team after a week off from competition.

With sole possession of first place in the Big Ten at stake, a title-hungry Penn State women's volleyball team takes to the road this weekend for an appetizer match at Northwestern tonight, and the main course against an equally voracious Wisconsin team tomorrow.

Coming off a weekend in which some dubbed him the most dangerous player on the field, Penn State men's soccer forward Simon Omekanda has made the jump from a good player to an extremely effective one.

After last weekend's brutal schedule, which included a victory over No. 11 Indiana and a one-goal loss to No. 2 Akron, the Penn State men's soccer team embarks on a kinder, gentler pair of games.

A first-round loss to the No. 2 player in the nation was nothing more than a small hurdle for Penn State men's tennis co-captain Mark Barry, who was able to continue his weekend at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Polo Ralph Lauren All-American Tournament.

One week after seeing a significant amount of time on defense for the first time this season, freshman utility man Justin King could be seeing even more action at cornerback this weekend.

Tony Hunt has been asked to do a lot in his Penn State career.

Many coaches say there is always a seam somewhere, it's just up to the returner to locate it.

It's become a little colder in State College this week.

For a few hours, the whole place became frantic, as if it were New York City and the Statue of Liberty had just been hijacked.

ARTS

Almost every Saturday during football season, more than 100,000 fans roar, "We are ... Penn State."

Bob Dylan's high school principal got down on his hands and knees to show Penn State associate English professor Toby Thompson the welded piano petal Dylan had broken off in his first public performance in the school's talent show.

There's not much I can tell you about A History of Violence without giving too much away, so forgive me if it's a little hard to talk about. I don't want to ruin it for you. Just know that, if you enjoy movies that go a little deeper than, I dunno, the one where Lil' Bow Wow roller skates, you should probably get to a theater.

Movies that are set in the future always seem to focus on the same things: flying cars, lasers and tight space suits. Serenity, however, takes a more classic approach to portraying the distant future.

Thank you, MTV Overdrive, for bringing me the second season of Making the Band 3 a full week early.

Love hurts. Love scars. Love wounds and mars. Just ask Ryan Adams. He'll tell you all about it.

Just when you were afraid Jersey rock had gotten lost in the Pine Barrens forever, here, once again, comes '80s superstars Bon Jovi to the rescue, offering up their latest creation, Have A Nice Day.

Whether you're appalled or entertained, the dark comedy Mail Order Wife is worth a look.

Allen Street Grill, 100 W. College Ave., will feature Bill Filer (231-4745).
