Contest winner gets room 'pimped'

Collegian Staff Writer

Two Beaver Hill apartment residents stepped out for bagels and a Wal-Mart run yesterday. When they returned, their bedroom had been transformed.

Greg Rosen (junior-biology) was the winner of the pimpmyroom.net sweepstakes, which takes the winner's room and, with his or her approval, pours college-minded novelties into it.

Pimpmyroom.net is the brainchild of Penn State students Danny Roukos (junior-mechanical engineering) and Igor Telyatnikov (junior-marketing), who said they developed the Web site to give college students college paraphernalia at wholesale prices.

The changes to Rosen's bedroom -- black lighting, neon lights, neon clocks and a Playboy omnipresence that included mirrors, a rug, a lamp, a coffee table, a martini set and a clock -- came as a shock to Rosen, who said he is a pretty simple guy.

"My first impression was, 'Wow, this is overwhelming,' " Rosen said.

Dan Lerner (junior-science), who shares the bedroom and apartment with Rosen, said he thought the new room looked great. "Oh, my God," he said as he walked through the door for the first time.

The changes were significant to a room that, on Rosen's side, had only a single poster, which declared "WTF" in large lettering above his bed.

Before the transformation, Lerner's side of the room focused mainly on posters of women. One of them, a Lindsay Lohan poster, was the only aspect of the room Lerner wanted untouched.

Roukos and Telyatnikov worked with two volunteers to hammer, tape and assemble the changes in two-and-a-half hours.

"This is as cool as we can make it without any construction," Roukos said.

Rosen said he was not worried about any damage to the apartment.

His name was picked out of a hat that included about 200 people who entered the contest by either purchasing merchandise or submitting a $2 sweepstakes entry online.

Rosen was entered into the contest because of a Corona lamp he purchased from the Web site in early September.

Rosen admitted that he might be luckier than most people. "The week I won this contest, I also won a Yuengling rug at The Gingerbread Man," he said.
