Letter to the Editor
Accountability needed for elected officials

The indictment of House Majority Leader Tom DeLay is finally proof that politicians aren't above the law.

In the wake of Halliburton and other Republican-friendly corporations winning no-bid contracts over the past several years, and the Bush administration's illegal detainments in the "war on terror," it's refreshing to see a high-ranking official get caught in his own wrong-doings.

We are not even halfway through the current legislative election cycle, and already things are taking a turn for the worse -- for both the federal government and the commonwealth of Pennsylvania's government.

DeLay may have been caught, but how many other Republican congressmen are abusing their legislative majority?

They create laws to benefit only their agenda and any laws that stand in their way are circumvented. John Roberts was just confirmed as the new Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, so who will stop them now?

It used to be that politicians had to answer to the people, but we as a society have become so focused on keeping two guys from getting married that we as individuals have forgotten which issues really apply to us.

Tom DeLay is only the tip of the iceberg; when will we stop restricting peoples' rights and get these corrupt politicians out of office?
