Smokers infringe on non-smokers' rights

This is in response to the article about smoke-free Mondays and the issue of public smoking ("No-smoke Mondays not trend," Sept. 27).

As a resident of New York, which introduced a smoking ban in all restaurants and enclosed buildings in July 2003, I can say that managers here should stop worrying so much if this ever makes its way into Pennsylvania. Business owners in New York had many of the same worries, but in the last two years all of their fears have been erased as business has remained steady or even increased.

Being in Pennsylvania makes me long for the times I was able to step out of a bowling alley or restaurant back home and not smell like an ashtray.

As for the interviewee who claimed, "It would be a hassle to have to go outside to smoke a cigarette," I have only three words: deal with it. When it's 15 degrees outside in January, I'm sure the cigarette will keep you nice and warm.

My right to breathe clean air should supercede your right to blow the garbage coming from your cancer stick right into my face.
