USG recruits first-year students

In an effort to raise awareness of the many student government branches and recruit fresh faces, Undergraduate Student Government (USG) members went to East Halls Commons yesterday.

Members set up a table with pamphlets and a display of all the USG branches and committees, and candy to draw in passers-by.

Keith Crouse, town senator, said the purpose of distributing flyers in East Halls Commons was to inform freshmen of USG and to get freshmen involved, especially since there are not many involved.

"We decided to direct our focus to East because we need more freshmen," Crouse said. "If we get them younger, people will stay in longer."

Crouse said when students reach their sophomore and junior years, they are already involved in organizations, but he said freshmen don't have a lot of friends yet and are not as actively involved. "It's good to kind of pull them in," Crouse said.

Leslie Holmes, public relations director, said USG is looking to recruit freshmen for Academic Assembly and executive committees including community service, public relations, marketing, social awareness, women's affairs and legal affairs.

Though recent USG Senate vacancies for Eastview Terrace, and East and Pollock halls are now being processed to be filled, Andy Banducci, senate president, said senate is still looking for senate staffers. Banducci said senate staffers basically do anything senators do, such as going to senate and committee meetings, except vote. He added that senate staffers generally have been appointed when vacancies occur.

Leigh Silkunas, West Halls senator, who was handing out flyers, said she was a senate staffer last year. She said that becoming a senate staffer is a great way to get involved with USG.

"It's a good way to get your foot in the door if you're not sure what you want to do in USG," Silkunas said.

Gina Anselmo (freshman-engineering), who came to get information about USG, said she was thinking about joining senate. "Just because they need people in it, and I'm willing to help out wherever they need me," Anselmo said.

Chanell Autrey (freshman-political science) said that since she is leaning toward a major in political science, she felt joining USG would give her insight into government.

"I kind of want to get some more experience in government," Autrey said.
