'Real World' couple cools off drama

Collegian Staff Writer

Danny Jamieson's hair isn't the way he would like it to be.

"He needs a girl to run their fingers through it," Mike Esterman, celebrity agent for Jamieson, said.

Jamieson's hair seems to have beaten him tonight as he sits down for a late dinner at The Deli, 113 Hiester St., gray hat and all.

He is in town for an appearance at the Crowbar, 420 E. College Ave., with fellow Real World: Austin castmate Melinda Stolp. The two have had a long day, landing in State College at 3 p.m. yesterday only to leave again come 4 a.m.

"We spend six nights a week in a bar," Stolp said, who appears more conservative in person than she does on TV.

Life after Real World is always hard for these new celebrities, but Stolp and Jamieson are learning to adjust.

"We're taking the good with the bad," Jamieson said. "Everyone thinks it's this big roller coaster ride, but it's not."

The roller coaster ride he's referring to is his new life in the spotlight.

"People put you up on a pedestal," Jamieson said. "We're not famous; we just had a camera follow us for a few months."

It's almost refreshing to see reality stars who aren't jumping into Hollywood to soak up all 15 minutes of fame they've been granted. Jamieson is looking to head back to college and start getting into real estate with his dad.

For now, the two are doing the ever-so-popular bar/college tour. What makes this duo's tour different is that they're preaching to students to do exactly the opposite of what they saw on this season's show.

"We're going around promoting safe sex and talking about alcohol abuse," Stolp said.

Even though viewers get a heavy dose of these seven strangers drinking pretty heavily and having sex a lot, Stolp said that the drinking didn't happen as often as it appeared to on the show.

"They edited everything to look like we went out drinking every single night," Stolp said. "They edited so much, especially our fights."

Stolp is referring to last week's episode, which showed her and Jamieson having problems in their relationship.

"When we would fight, it wasn't over each other," said Jamieson. "We were upset over our relationship and certain incidents surrounding that. I was never out looking for girls' numbers. Those numbers were really for Wes and Nehemiah."

Jamieson is talking about his other girl-crazy castmates, and he and Stolp agree that the entire cast helped make this Real World more realistic.

"We were more relatable," Jamieson said. "Sure, we do have the drinking throughout our season, but we have the subject of my mom passing away, me and Melinda starting a relationship, and Rachel, who was in the war."

All these issues have led to so much drama that the two said that instead of filming for the usual five months, they left after only three.

"After we came back from our big vacation, we were called into a meeting," said Stolp. "We were told we had until Friday to get everything ready."

There was so much happening, Jamieson explains, that they had to let them go.

"When we went to the farm, a few episodes back, Johanna ended up getting bucked off of her horse," Jamieson said. "We thought she was dead or severely injured, and I thought that was something they'd put in the show. They couldn't fit that in -- there's just so much drama."

Despite it all, both Stolp and Jamieson have had mixed feelings about how they've been portrayed.

Stolp said she feels that at the beginning of the show, she was portrayed as overly outgoing. She added that her portrayal now is more true to the way she really is.

Jamieson feels otherwise and doesn't like the way he is portrayed as heading out looking for girls every night.

"I was still with Mel during all of that drama," Jamieson said. "It wasn't even that dramatic; all of our fights lasted 20 minutes tops."

Jamieson had his arm around Stolp as they shared funny stories of fans coming up to them on dates after taping wrapped up.

The two won't say whether they're together or not; they said fans must continue to watch the show to find out.

As for now, the two will continue touring as the rest of their season plays out on MTV, but they're excited to start taping for the next MTV challenge in a few weeks.

"We're looking forward to a nice break, a different city and more drama," Jamieson said. "Coral is gonna rip Mel apart!"
