Parents flock to PSU this weekend

Sweep out the dorm room and change the sheets, because visitors are coming to Happy Valley this weekend.

During Parents and Families Weekend, students' guests can shake hands with Penn State President Graham Spanier, eat brunch in the dining commons and tour the Old Main bell tower.

Families can meet Spanier at the office of the president's open house from 1 to 2:30 p.m. today or tour the Old Main bell tower from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. tomorrow.

Later tomorrow, families can watch singers, dancers and other musicians at Synergy, Penn State's student talent show, at 2 p.m. in Schwab Auditorium.

Synergy organizer David Atlee (senior-mathematics, physics and astrophysics) said the show will feature 11 student performances and has been coordinated with Parents and Families Weekend for the past five years.

"We're expecting a good crowd because the event is usually popular with parents and students," Atlee said.

For Synergy, adult tickets cost $4.95, and students can purchase tickets for $4 with a student I.D. at Eisenhower Auditorium or at Schwab Auditorium prior to the show.

Visitors can also demonstrate their physical prowess and raise money for cancer research at the eighth annual Moxie-thon 5k at 10 a.m. Sunday by the Intramural Building.

Lion Ambassador Kelly Jacobs (senior-music education) said about 200 people have registered for the race already through the mail and online, and she expects another 200 people on the day of the race.

"We raised about $7,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society last year," Jacobs said. "Our goal is to raise more money than last year."

After taking tours and running races, hungry families can fill their empty stomachs for $5 at the all-you-can-eat dining commons. Lisa Wandel, Food Services associate director, said the dining commons offers this deal every year on Parents Weekend.

"This is our way of inviting people back into the residential dining areas," she said. "So far, we've gotten a lot of calls and e-mails from interested students and parents about the program."

While visiting campus, parents can also receive information on university programs. Vicky Triponey, vice president for student affairs, and her senior staff will answer questions about student life at 10 a.m. tomorrow in the HUB Auditorium.

Sue Powell, Student Affairs development director, said the meeting would be town-hall style and cover everything from housing to peer counseling.

"The Division of Student Affairs is a vast division, and we work to insure the well-being of all students," she said. "This is a good question-and-answer session, and we usually get more parents than students."

For students looking to make money, the Office of Human Resources is offering information for employment throughout the university from 12:30 to 4 p.m. on the HUB-Robeson Center's ground floor, recruiting and employment specialist Kenesha Bentley said.

For a complete listing of events, students can obtain pamphlets at the HUB or visit the Parents and Families Weekend Web site at www.alumni.psu.edu/events/pfday2005.
