Letter to the Editor
Pop music belongs in pro sport arenas

I can't believe that I'm going to get myself involved in the Beaver Stadium music debate, but I just wanted to point out a few observations that could indicate that the recorded music being played in the stadium really isn't appreciated by the students or alumni.

It seems there is a rotation of three or four songs that are played throughout the game. One of them is "Welcome to the Jungle" by Guns N' Roses. I think most people would agree that the song is a classic, but why do the people broadcasting the music over the stadium speakers only play the intro? By the third or fourth time, you begin to wonder if Slash is somewhere in the stadium practicing his guitar chops, perhaps so he can re-audition for his glorious former band?

And then there's that other song that they play to try to make "noise" in the stadium to psyche out the other team.

Yes, it does seem to get the students involved, but not as involved as they should be.

And so, the stadium music programmers continually play those same songs over and over, and from what I've observed, the students became disinterested pretty quickly.

Now, by contrast, when the Blue Band plays, people seem to get into it more, whether they're playing "Hey Baby," "Rock & Roll Part 2," or even "Pinball Wizard." At least you can sing and/or clap along to those songs.

In my view, I think we should ditch the recorded music, which, like a $6 cup of watered-down beer, belongs in professional sports arenas, but not in college football stadiums.
