Rooms not complete without pimp gadgets

Collegian Staff Writer

For those longing to revitalize their room, aghast at how bland their familiar posters have become, a start-up business is here to help the decor-impaired.

Pimpmyroom.net is a year-round business formed by two Penn State students, Danny Roukos (junior-mechanical engineering) and Igor Telyatnikov (junior-marketing) that sells popular college-oriented decorations.

"We're just trying to bring a little bit of style to State College," Roukos said.

Telyatnikov said he got the idea for the business while attending a wholesaler trade show with his father. He said his business buys at wholesale prices and passes the price break on to students.

Telyatnikov said they are currently running a sweepstakes in which the winner will have his or her room completely "pimped out." The entry deadline is mid-September, and the winner's room will be done Oct. 1.

"We're going for the type of effect that [MTV's Pimp My Ride] had," Telyatnikov said. "That's how sick we want this room to be."

Roukos said the changes to the room would likely include alcohol lamps, neon lights, bar mirrors, rugs, posters, Playboy decor and furniture. "The Corona lamp has been our No. 1 seller," he added.

Telyatnikov said students are automatically entered into the sweepstakes anytime they purchase an item, with an extra entry granted for purchases of more than $40, and students can submit a $2 sweepstakes entry online.

Telyatnikov said entry to the contest, which is restricted to Penn State students, is unlimited, and there have been more than 100 entries.

Jenny Difilippo (senior-elementary education) said the contest was a great idea since so many college students want their rooms to look cool but don't have the money to do it. "I would want everything in my room brand new," Difilippo said. "Gadgets and technology stuff are what I'd want the most."

Telyatnikov said the pair had set up a sweepstakes booth stocked with items for sale outside of Got Used Bookstore, 206 E. College Ave., from Aug. 26 to Sept. 1.

Rebecca Nissenbaum (freshman-Spanish and international business) was one of five female volunteers who dressed in short Playboy shirts and tight clothing and helped to work the booth with Roukos and Telyatnikov.

"I lure people in and get the boys over to the booth," Nissenbaum said.

For the time being, purchases can be made only online, but Roukos said they pay rent to the owner of Got Used Bookstore and plan to store a Pimp My Room display in the front of the store. The display, complete with neon signs and mirrors, will include an order sheet and a drop box for all sales.

"This is a permanent business," Telyatnikov said. "I want to make it a full-time job and franchise it to other schools."

He added that they would have at least one other Pimp My Room contest in the spring.

Got Used Bookstore was unavailable for comment at press time.
