I guess we now know where George W. Bush's priorities lie: protecting his right-wing religious agenda is more important than protecting the lives of his countrymen. Bush waited several days to return to Washington, D.C. after Hurricane Katrina, and that was only to sign the emergency financial aid bill. He has done too little to ensure that agencies like FEMA are doing their job, and that's evident in his decision to wait nearly a week to see the damage for himself. And furthermore, the $10.5 billion government aid is paltry compared to the $87 billion for Iraq.
We are spending one-eighth of the money to save lives than we are to needlessly kill our own troops.
But Bush didn't dawdle when Chief Justice Rehnquist died; he was on TV mourning him the next day and had John Roberts picked as a replacement within 36 hours. "Time is of the essence," he said.
Where was that urgency when people were drowning in New Orleans? His reasons are all too obvious: He's worried about his agenda to outlaw abortion, gay marriage, and any other fundamental rights ensured by the constitution. How can any American honestly support that man?
