Letter to the Editor
Paterno has basic right to privacy

Although I understand most of the arguments made in the editorial about the right to know Penn State employees' salaries ("State university status permanent; public has right to know salaries," Aug. 30), the editorial's point about Joe Paterno's salary is wrong.

Yes, taxpayers fill Beaver Stadium. But taxpayers support pretty much any business indirectly. They support all salaries in our society somehow or another. Does that mean we should release everyone's salary?

Each person has the right to keep their salary private.

I can understand exposing salaries paid directly with public funds, but the athletic department does not operate directly from public funds.

It operates independently from funds based on its own sales, just like any other business; and therefore, it deserves the same privacy.
