Moving in may be over, but stocking the refrigerator is still on most students' to-do lists.
And the first thing to fly off the shelves at the beginning of any academic semester, according to local store clerks, can be summed up in three simple words: Ben & Jerry's.
"It's like crack," said Bob Ervin, student manager at East Halls' Good 2 Go.
On-campus convenience stores, as Louie's, the Mix, Good 2 Go and the Moxie Coffeebar, offer a coordinated effort to provide students with what they want, said Jeff Boggie, Pollock dining commons assistant manager.
What they want is, apparently, some Ben & Jerry's ice cream.
"Some nights I really love to have it in my fridge," said Ashley Harris (junior-political science).
Dave McClelland, Louie's assistant manager, said the store sells about 7,000 pints of the ice cream brand every year.
"Ben & Jerry's is a very big seller here and always has been," Boggie said.
Along with the ice cream phenomenon, Easy Mac, Gatorade and water are among the most popular items sold at the convenience stores.
McClelland said Louie's has sold more than 60 12-packs of Aquafina since Thursday.
Boggie said a common strategic method the stores use is shelving the highest-selling items at eye level while placing the less-popular products in high reach or on the ground shelf.
"Items are very seasonal," Boggie said. "We [The Mix] sell over 950 bottles of Gatorade a week in the summer months."
Sports drinks and soda are also extremely popular during football weekends, Boogie said.
Kaitlin Corrado (sophomore-astronomy) said the convenience stores are especially helpful when it's rainy and walking is troublesome.
"I choose this because it's closer and come once or twice a week," Corrado said.
To capitalize on the popularity of certain food items, a committee of food service employees surveyed students last year on their favorite products, Boggie said.
Once these items were identified, the committee created a discount selection and brought in new products for this year's stock.
This is the first time the stores have attempted the sale, which changes every two weeks. The selected products are a few of the more popular items indicated on the surveys, and the price reduction is more suitable for college students, Boggie said.
