From pop to rock, no I.D.s needed tonight

Collegian Staff Writer

Delving into the new O.C. DVD and tacking up that freshly-bought Killers poster can wait 'til tomorrow: Tonight, indie-rockers young and old have got a date with a very special all-ages Roustabout! at Crowbar, 420 E. College Ave.

Roustabout! is a weekly indie-rock showcase held each Wednesday evening at the Darkhorse Tavern, 128 E. College Ave. But every once in a while, it pops up in unexpected places, including tonight when the squeaky-clean smiley-pop of The Spinto Band, the angular rock of Johnny Action Figure, and the pulse-pounding Jock Jams of The Bullet Parade will join forces. And, unlike those Wednesday gigs, you don't have to be of drinking age to get inside.

If you go
What:
Roustabout! featuring The Bullet Parade, Johnny Action Figure and The Spinto Band.
Time:
Doors open at 5 p.m.; the show begins at 9:30 p.m.
Date: tonight
Place: Crowbar, 420 E. College Ave.
Details: Tickets for the all-ages show are $8.

The Spinto Band is blowing up in every way but literally. The Delaware-based seven-piece act has popped up everywhere from the pages of Spin magazine to the snobbier-than-thou Webzine Pitchforkmedia.com. The band's latest release, Nice and Nicely Done, has garnered the band a huge amount of buzz and favorable reviews.

Spinto guitarist Jon Eaton has had a decidedly busy summer.

"We just got back from trying to hit all sorts of cities and stuff," Eaton said. "We went to about 50 places, and hopefully made a lot of new friends."

Bullet Parade frontman Jeff Van Fossan said that even though The Spinto Band is not currently touring, the group made a special effort to get to tonight's gig.

"We're really lucky," Van Fossan said. "Tonight's a one-off for Spinto. The tour's over, but they like the Roustabout! so much they decided to come up for the night."

Eaton wasn't about to call Van Fossan a liar.

"I'm glad we're getting back to Penn State," Eaton said. "As far as colleges, Penn State is definitely beyond the rest in terms of our fanbase."

The Bullet Parade has quite a devoted fan base in its own right, and guitarist Charles Ramsey said he's glad to bring Parade lovers into the hallowed halls of Crowbar.

"I love playing at Crowbar," Ramsey said. "The sound is really great there, and I feel like when we can hear each other better onstage, I think we play better."

Which, according to Ramsey, is not to say that The Bullet Parade ever phones it in.

"Ideally we like to play with an equal amount of oomph whenever we play," Ramsey said. "We try to deliver every time we take the stage."

With a few lineup changes and quite a few years behind them, Johnny Action Figure is growing up. Drummer John Ravert said the band's sound is constantly evolving.

"We've definitely added more to the band: keyboards, more vocal harmonies, different guitar parts," Ravert said.

Van Fossan, too, said he's glad to have secured the coveted 'first day of classes' slot for tonight's Roustabout!.

"I figured no one's got anything to do except walk around in herds," Van Fossan said. "So hopefully they'll herd on down to Crowbar."
