Two Uni-Mart employees charged with robbery could be back in State College by the end of the week if the necessary paperwork is completed.
Ernesto Rivera and Jose Urquaiga are currently being held on $5,000 bail each in Fort Lee, N.J., where they have been arrested and arraigned on charges of receiving stolen property, said Fort Lee Police Department Det. Howard Ginsberg.
Rivera and Urquaiga were stopped in New Jersey for a motor vehicle violation and Fort Lee police determined that the two possessed stolen property believed to be from a State College Uni-Mart, 1200 S. Atherton St., Ginsberg said. The State College Police Department issued arrest warrants this weekend for the two on charges of robbery, criminal conspiracy, theft, receiving stolen property, simple assault and harassment.
Rivera and Urquaiga are being held at the Bergen County Sheriff's Department and Ginsberg said that even if bail is posted, Rivera and Urquaiga would not be released because Pennsylvania has a warrant out for their arrest.
State College Police Sgt. Mark Argiro said he hopes the men being held in Fort Lee can be brought back to State College, where they face multiple charges related to robbery. He added that the state with the more serious charges typically takes the prisoner, which, in this case, is Pennsylvania.
"We're going to try to make it this week," Argiro said, referring to the extradition process.
Ginsberg said the trial for the charges in New Jersey would probably not take place for another six months to a year, which is normal.
In New Jersey, if a warrant is put out by a surrounding state, New Jersey will hold the suspects in custody until the other state extradites them.
A search of Rivera and Urquaiga's residence, 4958 Nittany Valley Drive, Apt. 1, turned up "fruitful" evidence, said State College Police Sgt. John Gardner.
Police allege that early Wednesday morning, Urquaiga drove Rivera, armed with a 15-inch crowbar, to the Atherton Street Uni-Mart. Rivera entered the Uni-Mart and pretended to steal deposit slips to cover up an internal theft of deposit slips that had occurred earlier, according to court documents. He also stole the cash drawer, which contained $216 and was recovered that same night, said State College police Det. D.A. Fishel.
Rivera fled to the car, and the two returned to their Lamar residence with plans to flee the state, according to court documents.
