Man robs Uni-Mart with 14-in. crowbar

The State College Police Department is searching for a man who committed armed robbery at Uni-Mart, 1200 S. Atherton St., at 2:08 a.m. yesterday.

Police said the man was armed with a 14-inch crowbar. He stole an undisclosed amount of money. Police are reviewing video surveillance.

According to a State College police press release, the man is a Hispanic or light-skinned black man, about six feet tall and thin. Police said the man was wearing a dark knit hat, a handkerchief across his lower face and a blue-and-white molded plastic Halloween-style mask. He was wearing a long-sleeved navy sweatshirt with an unknown light blue logo across the chest, baggy black pants, white sneakers and black-and-white gloves.

Police said the man was last seen fleeing the store on foot headed south on Allen Street. If anyone has any information they are asked to call State College Police at 234-7150.

Car argument results in man's beating

Penn State student Matthew Eugene Johnson, 22, was repeatedly beaten Tuesday after he "flicked off" a green BMW speeding near a school, said State College Police Sgt. Mark Argiro.

Both Johnson and witnesses told police that the driver, whose name is being withheld because charges have not been filed against him, stopped and punched Johnson several times on the right side of his face, Argiro said. Witnesses also said that Johnson did not retaliate, police said.

Argiro added that Johnson complained of loss of hearing, severe pain and sustained red marks on the right side of his face.

Police stopped the green BMW on Blue Course Drive and the driver admitted to speeding and assaulting the victim, Argiro said. Johnson refused to be taken to the hospital, but said he would seek treatment himself and report the injuries to police.

Charges against the driver depend on Johnson's injuries.
