Letter to the Editor
Terrorists win when we give up freedoms

In Mike Springer's column ("Liberals wrong for blaming terrorism on America," July 26), he blatantly uses sarcasm to say that one way to stop terrorism is to change our way of life, then cites that things such as forcing women to conceal their faces will never happen in America.

But at the end of the column he states how terrorist-loving liberals are negatively undermining ways to stop terrorist activities because they have a problem with random bag searches in the subway system due to an invasion of our right to privacy.

Springer says that if searching him will help stop terrorism, sign him up.

But didn't you just let the terrorist win? I could have swore when Mike was sarcastic he said he wouldn't change his way of life because then the terrorists would win, but then states he is all for random searches.

Unless Springer believes that the United States is absolutely perfect, then of course positive outcomes are possible if we blame ourselves for our faults. No one person or idea is perfect, so if we constructively criticize ourselves as the broader-minded "liberals" do, then maybe we can better ourselves.

Having random searches may help stop terrorism, but so would having a soldier occupy every household in America. Just because something will help stop terrorism doesn't mean we should run off and do it.

I like my freedoms just the way they were intended to be, and I won't give them up no matter how scary the terrorists may seem.
