I couldn't agree more with Philip Petter's response ("Poor coverage hurts sports teams, fans," July 7) to a recent Collegian editorial. The main reason many non-NCAA sports at Penn State do not have fan support is because the Collegian rarely covers these sports.
In my three years as a member of the Penn State Cycling Club, coverage of our bicycle races in the Collegian has been very hard to come by. For example, despite informing the Collegian in advance about our road races held in downtown State College in March 2004, the Collegian did not mention or photograph this event at all. This particular event attracted nearly 200 collegiate racers from 24 different schools, and Penn State clinched the overall win for the weekend.
The cycling club is one of many club sports (such as the bowling club, triathlon club, squash club, etc.) that are virtually unheard of in the sports pages of the Collegian. Many of these clubs compete regionally as well as nationally - just like varsity sports teams. However, unlike the varsity teams, club sports teams receive very little support from the university and must work hard to organize and promote their own events. Despite our grassroots efforts like canvassing, banners at the Allen Street Gates and word of mouth, our student newspaper is the ultimate resource for promoting ourselves and our events.
If the Collegian expects more recognition for any Penn State sport that isn't football, they should first heed their own advice by giving more support and recognition to these hard-working sports clubs.
