The Spinto Band, along with Bikini Carwash Company, is returning to State College by popular demand for this week's Roustabout! at 10 p.m. tonight at The Darkhorse Tavern, 128 E. College Ave.
"I've probably lost count how many times Spinto Band has played. I think maybe half a dozen times," Roustabout! organizer Jeff Van Fossan said. "I try to get them back as often as I can."
Spinto Band singer/guitarist Thomas Hughes said playing in State College has always been a positive experience for the band.
"We've always gotten wonderful reception [here]," Hughes said.
Spinto was first welcomed into the State College scene over a year ago when it performed in a friend's basement. Since then, the band has played many times in State College.
"When we played our first show we didn't know what to expect," Hughes said.
Fast forward to a year later, where the guys are kicking off their first tour in order to promote their new album, Nice and Nicely Done, released on June 7.
"It's a lot more produced," Hughes said when asked about the album's sound.
Having previously spent eight years recording in a home studio, Spinto Band is now collaborating with Nashville's Alex the Great recording studio.
As for its overall sound, Hughes said Spinto plays a form of self-described "lollipop music."
"You know, guitars and bells and all that fun stuff," Hughes added.
But Van Fossan alternately compares Spinto with bands like Jackson Five and Pavement.
The Spinto Band and Bikini Carwash Company tour, which is a one-man "brainchild" show developed by Spinto Band's friend Scott Wiener, is the result of a longtime friendship.
"It works nicely to have two bands in one car," Weiner said.
Backed instrumentally by members of The Spinto Band, Bikini Carwash Company features the styling of Wiener, who describes his music as indie "rocket pop."
Like Spinto Band, Weiner also recently released his first album, Bicycle.
"It's a year-old solo project that I worked on," Weiner said. "I had free time and some recording equipment."
By simple multi-track writing, he said he was able to piece together recordings of himself playing the drums, guitar, bass, tambourine and flute for the album.
After its State College stop, The Spinto Band and Bikini Carwash Company will continue on tour for 13 more shows, then head to the West Coast for the second portion of their tour.
