Johnson off team for fall

Collegian Staff Writer

Junior defensive tackle Ed Johnson was found responsible for two violations of the University Code of Conduct and placed under temporary expulsion through the summer and fall semesters according to information released by the Office of Judicial Affairs the week of June 6.

Further sanctions included a permanent loss of Johnson's on-campus housing contract due to University Code of Conduct violations of sexual misconduct and confining another student against their will, according to a press release from Penn State sports information.

No charges have been filed in the matter, according to campus police and the State College Police Department.

Johnson was suspended from the Penn State football team in March during the time the matter was being handled by Judicial Affairs.

Johnson did not participate in any spring practices.

A possible return to the team could take place in
the spring semester of 2006, but Penn State sports information director Jeff Nelson outlined several possible hurdles.

"In addition to fulfilling any stipulations that the university outlined, he also has several conditions for the team to be considered," Nelson said.

Penn State football coach Joe Paterno has refused to elaborate on the situation in several press conferences with the media during his summer tour of regional Pennsylvania Nittany Lion Club booster dinners, and only offered a brief comment in a press release statement.

"We regret that any of our players would put themselves in a situation that might endanger others," football coach Joe Paterno said in the press release. "Our players understand that they face team consequences beyond university sanctions and like all students must realize how at risk they are with inappropriate actions."

Johnson, who started three games last fall for the Lions, was expected to be a major contributor to the defensive line this season.
