The Penn State men's golf team will host the 29th annual Rutherford Intercollegiate at the Penn State Blue Course today and tomorrow. The tournament will feature 15 competitive teams for the two-day, 54-hole event.

Coach Greg Nye and Penn State will host the tournament and lead the field followed by last year's winner Towson, who halted the Nittany Lions' 12-year winning streak in the tournament. Junior Robby Shaw of Western Kentucky will be returning to the Blue Course a junior. In 2003, Shaw broke the 54-hole record previously set by Penn State's Jeff Turton, shooting a 201 (-15). Some of the other teams that will be participating include: Princeton, Wright State, James Madison, Navy, George Mason, Ohio, Akron, Rutgers, Virginia Commonwealth, Georgetown, St. Joseph's and Maryland.

The tournament became known as the Rutherford Intercollegiate in 1983 to honor R.B. "Pop" Rutherford Sr., the man known to the Lions as the "father of Penn State golf."

Rutherford organized the first Penn State golf team in 1922 and coached it until 1949. Penn State has dominated the Rutherford winning 12 of the last 13 years.

Thirteen Nittany Lion golfers have placed atop the leaderboard, the last featuring junior Greg Pieczynski last year.
