I work as a delivery person, so I am in my car a majority of the day when I am not at Penn State. The most difficult aspect of my job is quickly becoming the "sport" of dodging pedestrians.
In the last week, I have almost hit three people. All of them were college aged.
All three of them had one thing in common. All were at a downtown intersection with a traffic light. I had the green light all three times.
This would mean that the person was crossing the street illegally. One person even decided to give me a "one-finger salute" when I slammed my brakes and stopped within a foot of him.
He crossed in front of me just as I was heading straight on Pugh Street at Beaver Avenue after the vehicle in front of me made a left turn.
I have noticed this trend a lot lately. Everyone needs to heed traffic signals, including bicyclists. If you do not have the walk signal, do not even attempt to cross the street.
If a pedestrian is hit in a crosswalk where there are crossing signals and he or she did not have the "walk" signal, the pedestrian cannot get any money to pay for medical bills.
Remember that fact the next time you cross the street in front of a moving vehicle.
