I'd like to take a moment to briefly respond to Brandon Linton and Erin McCracken's opinion piece regarding this year's Movin' On performance ("Rusted Root 'falls' to emo pop-punk rockers," April 25).
While certainly they're entitled to their own opinions, I felt like their assessment of Rusted Root was far from fair. I'm not sure how they can make a statement such as, "the band seemed very out of their element in a college setting." This band's fan base is predominantly college students.
These are the crowds they typically play to. Perhaps what the Linton and McCracken actually meant to say is, "the band seemed out of their element when confronted with crowd surfing and obnoxious pushing."
As I have not seen Rusted Root perform before, this is merely speculation, but I surmise that this band is not often faced with such raucous behavior in their audience.
People in front of the stage were on the verge of being injured, and I feel that the band was quite justified in briefly requesting that the crowd tame down a bit.
This aside, I don't think there was a moment during the show that the audience was not receptive, or led the crowd to get "restless" as Linton and McCracken so astutely observed.
Perhaps they aren't accustomed to a "jam-band" (which is a stretch to even consider Rusted Root such) but these bands don't perform cheesy antics like jumping off scaffolding to keep the audience amused. While I am not an avid Rusted Root fan, I was thoroughly entertained by the band's excellent performance.
Perhaps the most telling example of the audiences' appreciation of this band was the obviously unplanned third encore song. If this performance qualified as a "little bit of a let down" then I suppose I don't know what I've been missing.
