Band cancels Crowbar show due to death of keyboardist

Collegian Staff Writer

While many are still grieving over the sudden and unexpected passing of Dark Star Orchestra (DSO) keyboardist Scott Larned, 35, Sunday afternoon due to heart failure, a concert might still go on in his name tonight at Crowbar, 420 E. College Ave.

While DSO will not be performing, there is the possibility of another band stepping in for the evening.

"The show was basically sold out," said Dave Wells, Crowbar operations director. "We're hoping to have Alchemy play and take up a collection in Scott Larned's name."

Larned, who was not only DSO's keyboardist but also its co-founder, was considered to be a point man and teacher to many.

"I really looked to Scott my first few years with the band," band spokesman Dave Weissman said. "He helped me out so much."

On the band's Web site, darkstarorchestra.net, even the Webmaster took a moment to praise all that Larned had done for him, calling him a teacher and friend.

The band, made famous for recreating Grateful Dead concerts, has started a following so big that it grabbed the attention of Rolling Stone and many Penn State students.

"I was going to take my boyfriend to the show," Meghan Roarty (senior-nursing) said. "I don't know if I am going to go now."

Roarty said she has seen the band several times with friends, and added that she was graduating but would come back in the fall to see the band play if they returned.

Many of DSO's upcoming spring shows that were sold out and Weissman wants fans to know that they will not be rescheduled.

"We've canceled the remainder of the tour, not postponed," he said. "The band however, wants to get back out playing around the end of May."

While the date in May is still not concrete, there will be a fund set up on the DSO Web site by the end of the week, to which fans can contribute.

"Scott left behind a lot of people, including a daughter, and we want to set up a fund for her on the Web site," Weissman said.

"If fans were coming to the concert and want to help out, we urge them not to send flowers," he added.

Instead of flowers Weissman and the other members of DSO would like fans to contribute to the fund by donating the money that they would have spent on a ticket.

As for those fans that already bought their ticket, Crowbar will be refunding the money today, upon request.

"The band is really sad that they can't play and want to return in the fall to State College and Crowbar," Weissman said.

"Don't worry, Dark Star Orchestra will be back," he added.
