Just after 1 p.m. Friday, the chimes of Old Main's bell tower rang 27 times -- one chime for each Penn State student who has passed away in the last year.
The Council of Commonwealth Student Government (CCSG) elected its new leaders Saturday, and all of them have said their main objective for the coming year is to unify Commonwealth Campuses and University Park.
Though the stage lights and beats of Rusted Root could be seen and heard faintly inside HUB Heritage Hall Saturday night, the crowd of about 250 people inside was far more attentive to the rousing dance performance by African dance troupe NOMMO.

It was practice. A considerably glorified practice, certainly. Pretty much the same scrimmaging they'd done so many times this spring.

On a day when so much was happening in the sports world, including the NFL draft and the NBA playoffs, the Penn State women's track and field team was up to its everyday business. Lacrosse is just like any other team sport. Offense gets the glory, but defense wins the games. The No. 59 Penn State men's tennis team talked all week about how its postseason destiny was in its own hands. Two conference wins against Michigan State and No. 64 Michigan would put the Nittany Lions (16-6, 5-5 Big Ten) in a good position for the Big Ten Championships next weekend. One way to look at Penn State's series-opening 6-5 loss to Iowa would be to say, hey, at least baseball outscored the football team against the Hawkeyes. The No. 10 Penn State women's lacrosse team completed a sweep of Ohio universities, both public and private this weekend, as they moved two games closer to a possible at-large bid to the NCAA tournament. With all of the questions swirling around the Penn State football team in the wake of two disappointing seasons, the last thing the Nittany Lions could afford going into next fall was a quarterback controversy. Forty years is a long time to be doing anything. Over that span of time, a lot can change. People enter your life, people leave it. You have kids, they grow up, they leave the house. Nobody went into the Blue-White game wondering how the Penn State defense would fare. In 1951 -- Joe Paterno's second year as a Penn State assistant football coach -- no Penn State players were selected in any rounds of the NFL draft. After a disappointing showing at home last weekend, the Penn State softball team went on the road and pulled off a tremendous upset victory against the No.1 team in the country and perennial Big Ten powerhouse Michigan, ending two incredible Wolverine streaks in the process. A loss is always more difficult to deal with for a team when it feels like its best effort wasn't put forth. The show will go on. Though hope might spring eternal, the Harvard men's volleyball team had no hope of upsetting the top-seeded Nittany Lions in an EIVA quarterfinal Saturday night in Rec Hall. Allen Street Grill, 100 W. College Ave., is featuring Magic Hat beer (231-4745). It was Blue Collar and Ron White at the Bryce Jordan Center Friday night when the comedian, often referred to as "Tater Salad" took the stage to perform what was a hilarious, rough-around-the-edges performance of the liking that White is so famous for. Dane Cook electrified thousands of Penn State students last night at the Bryce Jordan Center as the headliner of Tourgasm, a traveling stand-up comedy tour that also includes comedians Robert Kelly and Gary Gulman. Though the weather wasn't exactly as one would have hoped for Saturday's annual Movin' On concert on the HUB lawn, it didn't keep the fans or the bands from having a good time throughout the day. Here's what we thought about the day, from Fall Out Boy's highlights to the not-so-great headliner. Chants of "Ole Ole Ole" and "Oi Oi Oi" will echo down College Avenue tonight as The Bouncing Souls will rock its old-school punk at Crowbar, 420 E. College Ave., for an all-ages show with The Explosion, Let It Burn and The Loved Ones. |
