Police still have no leads in the search for missing Centre County District Attorney Ray Gricar, despite efforts by divers and rescue teams to search the Susquehanna River, its riverbanks and nearby islands throughout the weekend.
From 7 a.m. to 4:20 p.m. Friday, divers from the Sunbury Fire Department and a K-9 unit from Dauphin County searched the Susquehanna River near Lewisburg, where Gricar's car was found last Saturday. Centre County Search and Rescue searched the riverbank.
"We found some garbage, a shoe and a computer part," said Water Rescue Commander Tony Ghaffari, president of the search and rescue staff. "But unfortunately no clues in our search."
Twelve people searched the ground and between 12 and 15 divers from the Sunbury Fire Department searched the river, Ghaffari said.
Search and Rescue ground team Lt. Commander Mark Earnest said three teams searched the river bank area and three small islands on Friday.
"We conducted a hasty search, which is a small number of people searching for something in high probability areas close to where the subject was last seen," Earnest said.
Ghaffari said Bellefonte Police Chief Duane Dixon has not contacted him about additional searches, but said his team would be ready if another search is necessary. "Our team knows that we could have to be available on a very short notice," Ghaffari said.
Gricar was last heard from at 11:30 a.m. April 15, when he called girlfriend Patty Fornicola to tell her he was taking the rest of the afternoon off from work and going for a drive in his Mini Cooper.
Gricar's car was found in a parking lot across from Lewisburg's Street of Shops the following afternoon. At least two witnesses said they are relatively sure they saw Gricar that day in the antiques market.
Reports that a possible third witness saw Gricar in Lewisburg at about 1:30 p.m. April 16 proved to be negative, according to a Bellefonte Police Department press release.
Ghaffari said the ground search team searched about a 1/4 mile north and a mile south of where Gricar's car was found. "We weren't looking for anything specific or just for Gricar, but also any evidence, like if anyone else might have been there," Ghaffari said.
Sheriff's departments from Union, Northumberland and Dauphin Counties are helping with the investigation.
Jerri Williams, spokeswoman for the Philadelphia division of the FBI, said the bureau is also still involved in the case. However, Williams said she could not specify the FBI's exact role in the investigation. "The Bellefonte police is still in the lead," Williams said. "And we'll continue to assist them as long as they request our assistance."
The Bellefonte Police Department did not return repeated phone calls from The Daily Collegian yesterday.
The FBI joined the investigation last Monday when Bellefonte Police Chief Duane Dixon asked for help monitoring Gricar's phone, credit card and ATM card records. To date, there has been no indication of recent activity.
Bellefonte police have scheduled another press conference for 2 p.m. today at the Bellefonte Municipal Building. Anyone with information is asked to contact Bellefonte police at 814-353-2320.
