Recently I've noticed that Young Americans for Freedom (YAF) has been posting fliers around campus encouraging women that the best way to prevent rape is to carry a firearm.
Firstly, I would like to thank this group that professes to be about promoting freedom for encouraging people to become felons.
1. You must be 21 years old to obtain a carry permit in Pennsylvania. 2. It is illegal per state and local ordinance to carry or possess a weapon on campus. 3. It is against federal law to carry a firearm onto any school campus. Sounds good.
YAF and the National Rifle Association have managed to construct a plan so that any woman that is A. over 21, B. wont have to travel to or through campus and C. doesn't live on property owned, leased or used by the university can (in theory) protect themselves from being sexually assaulted. Absolutely brilliant plan to help prevent sexual assault in a college town.
Once again the hardliners in the Republican Party, which I daily grow increasingly ashamed to be a member of, have put their minds to the task and managed to come to completely the wrong conclusion.
Even ignoring that most sexual assaults are conducted by persons the victim knows and trusts, this plan is utterly useless. Way to go, guys.
It's nice to know that YAF cares not at all for persons under 21 or living on campus, and even less for the increasing problem of sexual assault that involves those persons in that locale.
