State College Police Department said yesterday that a 20-year-old female Penn State student who reported being raped at gunpoint last week has now told police the alleged crime never occurred.
Police investigating the early morning April 11 rape interviewed the alleged victim and her parents to discuss specific inconsistent statements in her story, according to a State College Police press release. Police would not specify what the inconsistencies were.
The student previously told police that the rape occurred between midnight and 12:15 a.m. April 11 near the 100 block of Hetzel Street. She told police she was walking along Hetzel Street and was approached from behind by an unknown man who pushed her against a building and told her he had a gun. The student said the suspect forced her into an older model, four-door Honda Civic or Accord, after she told the man she did not have any money.
The victim originally also told police she saw a black gun in the man's right hand before he placed his left hand over her eyes and sexually assaulted her.
According to the press release, the woman told police that those incidents never occurred. Police refused to disclose why the female said she fabricated the report.
State College Police Sgt. Mark Argiro said the fact that the victim lied was not pertinent to the case at this time. He said the situation is a "gray" issue, but he would not elaborate on that statement.
Argiro said police will now consult with the district attorney's office to determine whether charges should be filed against the woman. The district attorney's office was unavailable for comment yesterday.
Police said they would not release the woman's name unless charges are filed.
Peggy Lorah, director of the Center for Women Students, said people should not make judgments when it comes to rape. "People should not make assumptions, which is hard not to do," she said. "It's human nature to jump to conclusions."
Argiro said the student is currently not attending classes and is staying with her parents.
