Teenage Wasteland
Show captures emotion, reality of teenage life

Collegian Staff Writer

Almost 11 years ago, ABC aired the first episode of My So-Called Life, a drama that so honestly captures what it's like to be a teenager, it'll make you blush.

But after only one season of the groundbreaking show, which showed life through the eyes of 15-year-old Angela Chase, played by a young Claire Danes, the show was canceled. Though Life was praised in many magazines and newspapers as a hot new TV show, and Danes walked away from the experience with a Golden Globe for Best Actress, audiences did not agree. Maybe Life was keepin' it too real for most couch potatoes, but real is the essence of the show.

Luckily, the show has since been released on DVD, in case you missed it in '94.

Danes portrays the awkward and naïve Angela, who's so fed up with life, or the lack thereof, that she dyes her hair red and starts hangin' with a new crowd -- the wrong crowd, in her parents' eyes. Enter Rickie Vasquez (Wilson Cruz), the endearing, sexually confused boy who is more-often-than-not found in the girl's bathroom and Rayanne Graff (A.J. Langer), the party-girl that everybody knows (and I mean, knows knows ...). And, along with her new hair, Angela has a new crush: dreamboat Jordan Catalano, played by dreamboat Jared Leto.

The scenes between the cool-yet-not-all-there Jordan and Angela are some of my favorites because of how natural and yet completely uncomfortable and heart-wrenching they are.

Viewers are guided through the show by Angela's voiceovers, which are always thoughtful and sincere, and always contain plenty of the word, "like."

Be taken back to high school as you watch Angela and her friends experience familiar problems with parents, first love, first sex, heartbreak, overdoses, betrayal, passion, anger and confusion. My only qualm with this show is that it ended too early, leaving loyal fans hanging, especially wondering what exactly happens with Angela and dreamy Jordan.
