Crowbar will 'say hello' to Finch
Local Scene

Collegian Staff Writer

Say hello to a chance to rock out one more time before hibernating in those books to study for finals.

Finch, along with Vendetta Red, Nurses, and Emanuel are set to pound the finals anxiety out of students during an all-ages show Wednesday at Crowbar, 420 E. College Ave.

Finch will preview material from its upcoming album, Say Hello to Sunshine, due in stores June 7.

Finch guitarist Alex Linares said the band did not take its time during the recording process of the new album, even though the total writing and recording process ending up taking almost two years.

He said it felt as if the band rushed the whole time and was in a panic to complete the album.

"We needed to get it done, but at the same time we wanted to make sure we were creating exciting new music and not just a product," Linares said. "We didn't want people to be going to the store like, 'Let's see, I need a bar of soap and ... the new Finch record.' "

Linares said that alot of the new album will still be recognizable as Finch for the most part but that some songs might surprise a lot of the band's older fans.

"Some of it is just ... weird. Some songs are like, 'this is Finch' and some are like, 'wow, is this Finch?' We just wanted to make a raw record," Linares said. "We wanted to sound like a five-piece band playing our hearts out."

Linares said the band purposely left some mistakes on the album to give it character and keep the energy of the initial recording.

"It will claw your face off," he added.

He said his obsession with Radiohead has helped and hindered him because it is hard to produce anything that he thinks is good when he's always comparing it to Radiohead.

Linares said he is excited to be out on tour with Nurses, a band that Finch has known for a long time, and he promised that people will be hearing a lot from that band soon.

Matt Breen, lead singer/guitarist for newcomers Emanuel, said that ever since the band's debut album Soundtrack to a Headrush was released, he's noticed fans at shows gradually become familiar with the band. He's started to see people singing along to the songs, which Breen said is a great feeling.

"It can be frustrating when you are an opening band and people have never heard of you before and haven't heard your music," Breen said. "You are always wondering whether they care, or if they just haven't heard your stuff yet and are just really starting to take it in."

He said that even though getting people into the band is a slow process, everything else for the band has been picking up steam. Emanuel has already been on two tours overseas and has been touring nationally for over a year now.

Breen said Emanuel's album leaked on the Internet months before its release date helped the band build up a mini-fan base even before it had any music available in stores.

"On one hand I thought it was awesome, and on the other hand who knows how many kids are getting our music for free," Breen said. "I can't really say much because I probably have $50,000 worth of pirated music on my iPod."
