I am getting so sick and tired of what has been going on since racial slurs were said to the former Black Caucus president.
The government made laws that made it illegal to harm anyone because of race, ethnicity or sexual preference, and yet these crimes still go on. Black Caucus is trying to "stick it to the man" by blaming Penn State when we already have policies in place to deal with racial discrimination.
I think its list of demands won't make any improvements and are a bit over the top. But discrimination still exists, and although I never experience it here, it would be wrong of me as a black person to say we shouldn't do anything about it. We should try to change the minds and behaviors of the small-minded few.
But yelling in protest at the university won't accomplish that. It will merely aggravate the situation and segregate the black population even more for causing trouble and making noise.
How about the Black Caucus works to end the division on campus instead of further perpetuating it.
For example, go to the HUB lately? Did you see how people sit amongst their own?
Maybe they need to start a campaign to bridge the gap.
Maybe if everyone saw that we were all the same -- students trying to get an education -- and not a group of minorities complaining and never being satisfied with what we are given, expecting preferential treatment when some of us don't deserve it, then maybe we could all actually start getting along.
I know that there will always be issues of prejudice and discrimination for all groups, but there is only so much the government and the administration can do.
Are we behaving like we are trying to make things better or are we just making the problems worse? I'd just like members of Black Caucus to think about that.
