Let me begin this letter by saying that I am not trained to give advice; I am not majoring in psychology, and I therefore have no basis for the following remarks I am about to make. I can promise you, however, that what follows comes from the bottom of my heart.
For the last several months I have opened up my copy of The Daily Collegian each day only to be attacked with headlines dealing with minority groups feeling hated, majority groups feeling threatened and a campus that is extremely divided. What I would like to know, my fellow members of the Penn State community, is what happened to our souls?
When I walk around this beautiful campus full of endless opportunities for all who are lucky enough to be given the chance to attend, I see two colors: blue and white. Giving out scholarships and erecting monuments will not create equality.
We must be able to put our hands to our chests and feel the same heart beating. We must all be able to look to our right and left -- and not see skin color. We must recognize that all who walk this campus are here because they bleed blue and white. Inside each of us is a soul that wants the same thing as our neighbors -- to better ourselves and succeed in life.
Our souls are united as one; our souls are part of the same equation. Why then, can't our eyes be?
