IFC, council talk progress at meeting

The Interfraternity Council (IFC) executive committee and members of the State College Borough Council met last night at Delta Tau Delta fraternity, 429 E. Hamilton Ave., to discuss community issues.

IFC President Brian Bertges said he wanted to have the meeting in order to discuss progress the greek community has made.

"[We wanted] to further establish communication and show the progress we are making in areas, as well as obtain new ideas and direction," he said.

Council member Cathy Dauler agreed with Bertges and said the meeting was centered on the IFC's response to community issues.

"[There was] quite a bit of discussion on neighborhood issues and how the IFC is trying to respond to noise, trash, parties and so on," she said.

Bertges said the IFC and Borough Council members spoke about holding people accountable for sanctions delegated to fraternities.

"They are putting together procedures to monitor the goings on in fraternities," Council member Jeff Kern said.

Kern called the meeting a success, adding that the IFC has made a lot of progress throughout the semester.

"The IFC is making a pledge to move forward and be a lot more self-policing," he said, adding the IFC will make a presentation to Borough Council next fall on the topic.

Meetings between the IFC and Borough Council will become a more frequent occurrence next semester, Kern said.

"Hopefully we can add the Panhellenic Council as well," Kern said.

Dauler suggested fraternities should do more to publicize the activities they have participated in during the past few months.

"We didn't know how many activities fraternities are involved in that have social benefits," she said.

Dauler said executive board members also spoke about Borough Council's funding for the Training for Intervention ProcedureS (TIPS) program, but did not ask for any monetary help at the meeting.

"They're impressed with the results and they said they'd be willing to help," said Jason Yanushonis, IFC vice president of standards.
