Schlafley, Moser miss mark on rape opinions

Shauna Moser of Young Americans for Freedom as well as Phyllis Schlafly are sadly misinformed about the subject of sexual assault.

Describing the Take Back the Night Rally as an "ineffective" solution to stop rape detracts from the true purpose of the rally.

Had they attended they would have seen that anyone who was ready to share their story could do so.

They were able to finally speak about that time in their life that they completely lost control, and were violated physically, emotionally and spiritually in the most intimate way.

Take Back the Night is about raising awareness. It is about showing survivors that they are not alone.

It is a safe place where anyone can share these experiences in a supportive community. I find it difficult to believe that Schlafly and Moser have done any research into the matter when they say that there are more "proactive solutions" such as taking self-defense classes or carrying a weapon.

How are these "solutions" going to help a victim of acquaintance, spousal or date rapes that make up at least 70 percent of all rapes?

It only provides checklist of things that she failed to do to "stop" the rape. It allows society to hold a victim accountable because her rapist violated her.

The only solution to stopping rape lies in the hands of the select few men who choose to rape.

In the meantime, we as a community can offer support to the victims so they can heal.
