Volé set to perform ballet from Broadway

For The Collegian

Volé, Penn State's ballet club will showcase its talent tonight and tomorrow night in a performance titled "There's No Business Like Show Business," at the State College Area High School.

Fourteen numbers will perform, highlighting the skills of more than 60 dancers from all levels of ability. Most of the numbers are being performed to music from Broadway shows, including songs from Movin' Out, Damn Yankees, Wicked, Mamma Mia!, Sweet Charity, RENT, Chicago, Les Misérables and The Phantom of the Opera.

Volé members also choreographed every number. Each choreographer chose the song and created his or her own original piece to present at the showcase.

Choreographers said they believe the beauty of the dance and music make it easier for them to create something they hope the audience will enjoy.

"It's hard not to duplicate things you have seen before, but with my song, I wanted to show the beauty of this lyrical ballet," said Danielle Cyr (sophomore-marketing), who choreographed the dance for her chosen song, "On My Own," from Les Misérables.

Cyr said she hoped the slower song would allow the elegance of the dance to shine through.

"The audience will be able to see the graceful ballerinas and the passion that the music invokes. I hope they'll be moved by the choreography," Cyr said.

The club began in 2000 with the hopes of providing classes to all different skill levels, and has grown from a few members to more than 250. To alleviate the stress of competition and feeling inadequate, members do not have to try out for the club but are asked to come to a placement class where their level of skill is assessed. Each member is then placed into classes at their own skill level. The showcase is a culmination of a semester of classes, which also places dancers in the different numbers based on their comfort level.

Dancers agree that the laid back atmosphere of the club is more conductive to having a good time and for those that simply love dancing and want to continue doing so.

"I love the club; it's exactly what I was looking for. I've been doing ballet all of my life, and this a great way to continue dancing," said Amanda Bowen (freshman-communication sciences and disorders).

Volé Vice President Erin Meehan said the showcase will break down some of the stereotypes that surround ballet, including informing people that the classical art form can be fun when songs from today's popular musicals are incorporated.

"It's more contemporary and jazzy," Meehan said. "The showcase will let the audience see how interesting and upbeat ballet can be and that we're about having more fun than a typical competitive club."
