Cows not in mutual bond with keepers

I thought it was a nice story how Winnie Faust bonded with her "friend"; a cow which she named Elegance ("A moo-tual relationship," April 12). Faust groomed and trained Elegance, gave her a haircut, and used adhesive and gels to give a feminine look to Elegance.

The judging criteria for the Block and Bridle show (appearance, presentation, cleanliness) seems very similar to the criteria for a dog show. How should a person treat his/her friends? Would you slit your friend's throat? Would you dismember and eat your friend for dinner? Would you celebrate the happy moments in your life by cooking your friends to "medium rare" or "well done"? One may argue that humans are different than animals. But what is the difference between a dog and cow? I'm told that we eat cows because they taste good, and because the Bible condones it. So why don't we eat dogs? I don't recall anything in the Bible saying it's wrong to eat dog meat. Perhaps dog meat tastes even better than beef, but most people wouldn't even think of ever tasting dog meat. Is this because cows don't "woof", or because you can't play "fetch" with a cow?

The Collegian shouldn't be printing fallacies about how cows are in a "moo-tual relationship" with their keepers. With "friends" like us, who needs enemies?
