Lions SP Alan Stidfole earns 2nd weekly honor
Penn State junior left-handed pitcher Alan Stidfole picked up his second Big Ten Co-Pitcher of the Week award in three weeks after pitching his second straight nine inning complete game shutout in the Nittany Lions' 3-0 win at Northwestern on Sunday.
Stidfole fanned a career-best 13 batters against only one walk, and extended his shutout streak to 30 innings. He scattered four hits and worked out of a bases-loaded, no-out situation in the eighth innning to help Penn State take three out of four games against the Wildcats over the weekend.
Stidfole is among the Big Ten Conference leaders in several categories. In Big Ten games only, he leads the conference in ERA (0.00), strikeouts (21), opposing batting average (.156), innings pitched (18.0), wins (2) and batters struck out looking (6).
He is also among the conference leaders in several categories in all games this season. He is seventh in overall ERA (2.96), fourth in opposing batting average (.225), fifth in innings pitched (45.2), fourth in strikeouts (41), sixth in batters struck out looking (12) and fifth in wins (4).
Penn State basketball presents annual awards
Penn State Nittany Lion basketball coach Ed DeChellis handed out the hardware at the 26th Annual Nittany Lion Hoops Club Banquet. Three freshmen and two seniors walked away with a total of six awards.
Senior Kevin Fellows earned the Scholastic Award, presented by athletic director Tim Curley. Fellows also claimed the Nittany Lion Club Senior Scholastic Award.
Classmate Jason McDougald was named the team's Unsung Hero. McDougald played in 84 games during his four-year career at Penn State.
Freshman Geary Claxton was named Scrappiest Player. Claxton, selected to the Big Ten All-Freshman team by the conference's coaches, led Penn State in scoring this season with a 12.7 points per game mark. He also averaged 6.3 rebounds per contest and was among the top freshmen in the conference in scoring, rebounds, blocks and offensive boards.
Classmate Danny Morrissey was named Most Improved Player. Morrissey played in all 30 games during his rookie campaign, averaging 7.7 points per game and 2.5 rebounds per game and led Penn State with 53 three-pointers.
Freshman Mike Walker claimed the final honor, earning the Most Inspirational Player award. Walker played in all but one game this season and started 15.
Former PSU soccer coach passes away at age 80
Former Penn State men's soccer coach, Ken Hosterman, died Thursday in State College. Hosterman, 80, was a State College resident.
Hosterman was head coach of the Nittany Lions from 1953-67, posting a 72-60-5 mark over his 15 years as mentor. During his tenure, Penn State won two IFSA Championships. The first came in 1954 when his team was a perfect 8-0 and the second came the next year when he led Penn State to a 9-0 mark. Hosterman was selected Coach of the Year by the National Soccer Coaches Association in 1955. The '54 and '55 seasons are the last time that Penn State has posted back-to-back undefeated campaigns.
