Tonight, 10 fraternity members will compete in the Mr. Fraternity Pageant, a new Greek Week event.
Programming Chair Erica Marshall said the contestants will compete in four areas: a Penn State attire contest to determine who has the most school spirit, a formal wear competition, a talent competition and a question-and-answer portion.
Jared Brown, assistant director of fraternity and sorority life, said he thinks Greek Week continues to improve every year, and this year's events will surpass past years because of the addition of several new events, including community service.
"The Greek Week 2005 Overall Committee has been working diligently for months to reserve space, make contacts with community groups, meeting with Greek Week chairs from the chapters that are participating and working with the four governing councils to make this year's Greek Week open to all that are Greek," Brown said.
Continuing with the unity theme, another new addition is Saturday's Community Service Day. Marshall said this event was created to help connect greek life with State College.
"Each fraternity and sorority have picked specific activities to help out the community," Marshall said.
Public Relations Chair BrieAnn Szatkowski said another addition to this year's events include "The Eliminator," a relay race starting at 5 p.m. on the HUB lawn and ending at Old Main. The relay will take place at the end of Friday's crazy games event, and will determine an overall winner for Greek Week 2005.
Originally held on Fairmount Avenue, the relay events were moved to the HUB to display the greek community's unity with Penn State, Szatkowski said.
"We are hoping that by moving these events, the rest of the Penn State community will see what fun Greek Week is and will want to be a part of the greek system," she said.
Greek Week will end with the eighth annual 5K AIDS Walk on Sunday. Marshall said the greek community participates in this event to help create a greater awareness of AIDS.
"The money raised in the walk helps to fund educational programs within Centre and Clinton counties to increase AIDS awareness," Marshall said.
"This is a great way to end the week, through community service and unification," she added.
